What Ventura County growers say
Drone spraying prices in Ventura County
Drone spraying in Ventura County, CA is billed per acre, one pass, application only. Product comes from you or your pest control dealer, usually on a written recommendation from a licensed Pest Control Adviser (PCA), and a DPR-certified operator applies it at label rate.
| Service | Typical rate | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Strawberries & cane berries | from $18/acre | botrytis, mites, lygus; beds and hoop houses |
| Vegetables (celery, peppers, leafy greens) | from $17/acre | aphids, worms, mildew |
| Avocado groves on slopes | from $24/acre | thrips, mites; steep hillsides |
| Lemons & other citrus | from $24/acre | where labels allow; ACP rules apply |
| Cover crop seeding & spot work | from $16/acre | grove floors, field edges, weed patches |
Directory data for Ventura County shows a headline rate of $14–$22 per acre for field crops, with citrus and orchards at $18–$35 and vineyards at $17–$34. Specialty operators in the county quote by job. Our starting rates sit 5–15% below the middle of each range. Price depends on carrier volume, block size and slope, canopy height, obstacles such as power lines, hoop houses and wind machines, and travel. Jobs under 5 acres are billed at a 5-acre minimum.
Strawberries, avocados and specialty crops
Ventura County has some of the most valuable farmland in the country. The USDA 2022 Census counts 1,812 farms on about 300,600 acres, averaging 166 acres, with orchards on about 46,200 acres. In the county's 2024 Crop and Livestock Report, total value reached about $2.31 billion. Strawberries were the top crop for the 25th straight year at about $709 million, followed by avocados at about $339 million, nursery stock, celery and raspberries. The county ranks first in California for avocados, raspberries and lemons by value.
| Crop | Main drone jobs | Typical timing |
|---|---|---|
| Strawberries | Botrytis gray mold; two-spotted spider mite; lygus bug | Year-round, peaks spring |
| Raspberries & blackberries | Botrytis; mites; spotted wing drosophila | Spring–fall |
| Avocados | Avocado thrips; persea mite; grove floor weeds | Spring–summer |
| Lemons | Citrus thrips, mites, scale; ACP program sprays | Spring–fall |
| Celery & peppers | Aphids, worms, leafminers, mildew | Year-round |
Avocado groves on steep hillsides
Avocados grow on steep slopes around Santa Paula, Fillmore, Ojai, Somis and Moorpark, where ground rigs struggle and helicopters are costly for small blocks. This is one of the best uses for drones in the county:
- Steep terrain is sprayed without workers or tractors on the slope.
- Thrips and persea mite passes are timed to flush and fruit set.
- Mapped flight paths follow terraces and contours.
- Volume check: many avocado and citrus labels call for higher volumes, so the operator confirms each label before quoting.
Berries and vegetables on the Oxnard Plain
Strawberries, raspberries, celery and peppers on the Oxnard Plain around Oxnard and Camarillo are harvested often, with pickers in the field most days. Drones help with tight schedules:
- Short re-entry and pre-harvest intervals are planned around picking crews.
- No driving on beds or between hoop houses.
- Wet winter fields are treated without ruts.
- Coastal fog often lifts mid-morning, so flights are scheduled once leaves are dry enough and wind is calm.
Citrus and Asian citrus psyllid
Asian citrus psyllid is regulated in Ventura County, and treatments in some areas follow CDFA and county requirements. Lemon growers around Santa Paula, Fillmore and Piru also manage thrips, mites and scale. Drones fit young groves, borders and steep blocks; full-canopy sprays in mature citrus often need more volume than a drone can apply efficiently.
Schools, neighbors and airspace
Farms in Ventura County often sit next to homes and schools. California rules restrict many pesticide applications near schoolsites, especially by aircraft during school hours, and county permit conditions add buffers. Restricted material applications also require a Notice of Intent to the Agricultural Commissioner.
Naval Base Ventura County at Point Mugu, Camarillo Airport and Oxnard Airport put parts of the plain in controlled or special-use airspace. Operators check airspace for each site and get FAA authorization where needed.

California rules for drone pesticide application
- DPR pilot certificate. Anyone spraying pesticides by drone needs an Unmanned Pest Control Aircraft Pilot Certificate from the Department of Pesticide Regulation.
- County registration. Pest control businesses and pilots register with the Ventura County Agricultural Commissioner before working in the county.
- Permits and notices. Growers need an Operator Identification Number, and restricted materials need a permit and a Notice of Intent.
- PCA recommendation. Most agricultural applications follow a written recommendation from a licensed Pest Control Adviser.
- Federal rules. Operators need an FAA Part 107 remote pilot certificate, a Part 137 agricultural aircraft operator certificate and a Section 44807 exemption for drones over 55 pounds. If a label prohibits aerial application, the product cannot be applied by drone.
